D. Machines for Making

These models differ from the pavilions in character and intent. They diverge from the idea of considering place although some are to be found in places with particular characteristics. Each is a mechanism for producing qualities I deem to be necessary in the world. Their mechanical and electronic workings are indicative of the machinic means that can be necessary to produce such qualities.

18 Machine for Making Simplicity

Models of (selected pieces of) the world, whether it is perceived or imputed, struggle to render the characteristics of this ‘world as understood’ amenable to a comprehensible accounting. Over time these formulated models (be they personal and everyday, or scientific) are adjusted to new understandings and refurbished to continue to replicate their selected section of the world. Unless the model is somehow more comprehensible or simpler than that which it models, it is not of use as either a representational or explanatory tool. Typically, as domains of inquiry are more understood, a model may be simplified: more may be done with less. Phenomena in the world are, in earlier models, deemed to be simpler than they are later understood to be. Often, an increase in the ability to model phenomena as having the complexity they are deemed to exhibit when modelled later, has derived from developments in data acquisition, mathematics, and in computing. Those characteristics of the understood world once forced into a modelled relationship represented by a straight line or regular curve on a graph are now more richly understood and require new modellings.

Thoughtfully giving a simpler account of anything without doing it violence presents great difficulties and this goal is frequently insurmountable. The making of simplicity itself requires fiendish care and precision. Hence, this machine utilises myriad processes and requires a commensurate number of elements. I make no attempt here to explain or enumerate. Fortunately, I was able to acquire the full range of parts that were necessary. As a result, simplicity can slide neatly down the chute at the front of the machine.
